National September 11 Memorial & Museum Names Alice Greenwald as President & CEO
As Director of Museum Since 2006, Greenwald Brings Continuity and Deep Ties to New Role
(New York) November, 22, 2016 – The National September 11 Memorial & Museum Board of Directors voted today to name Alice Greenwald as President & CEO. As Director of the Museum since 2006, Greenwald has spent the past decade envisioning and helping build the museum experience to commemorate and honor the victims and survivors of the 9/11 attacks in New York, Pennsylvania and at the Pentagon. She will continue her functions as Director of the Museum in this new role. Greenwald will bring her intimate knowledge, experience and grasp of the memorial’s mission to her new role leading the nonprofit organization that oversees operations for the 9/11 Memorial & Museum. Greenwald will assume the role of President & CEO as of Jan. 1, 2017, succeeding outgoing President & CEO Joe Daniels. The search process to replace Daniels was co-chaired by Russ Carson and Ira Millstein, aided by the firm of Spencer Stuart.

“I’m deeply humbled to have been selected by the board to succeed Joe Daniels as the next president of the 9/11 Memorial and Museum,” Alice Greenwald said. “In today’s world, the need to help New Yorkers and Americans reckon with the tragedy of such immense loss has only grown. Even as the September 11, 2001 attacks recede further into memory, the nearly 30 million people who have visited the Memorial in recent years are a testament to its enduring importance. I’m honored to have been chosen to be the keeper of that mission.”
During her tenure as Director, Greenwald and her team led the creation of the 9/11 Memorial Museum experience. Greenwald planned and developed the Museum’s exhibitions, facilitated its 2014 opening, and launched programs that reach millions of people around the world. Under her leadership, a record 7.4 million visitors have come to the Museum. In just the past year, the Museum welcomed Pope Francis to Ground Zero and unveiled its first major special exhibition, “Rendering the Unthinkable: Artists Respond to 9/11.”
Prior to joining the 9/11 Memorial Museum in 2006, Greenwald served as the Associate Museum Director for Museum Programs at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. Greenwald spearheaded the Collections, Exhibitions, Education, Library and Museum Services divisions in this position, which she assumed in September 2001. She first became involved with that Museum in 1986, helping design its permanent exhibition. Greenwald has also served as the Executive Director of the National Museum of American Jewish History. Earlier in her career, she was the Acting Director of the Hebrew Union College Skirball Museum in Los Angeles.
Greenwald holds a bachelor’s in anthropology and English literature from Sarah Lawrence College and a master’s in the history of religions from the University of Chicago Divinity School. She lives in Manhattan.
