Her husband, Staff Sergeant Cesar Rodriguez, a Military Police officer, had been deployed to Bosnia for less than a month. Being a military spouse, and knowing many people who worked at the Pentagon, Myrna felt called to action. She has responded by helping raise money for the Pentagon Memorial Fund to honor the 59 passengers and 125 military and civilian personnel who lost their lives when American Flight 77 crashed into the Pentagon that day.

They have seen the project evolve from just words and wishes to an international design competition, then to a major fundraising effort ranging from neighborhood lemonade stands to corporate boardroom pitches. Now, it finally seems real.

Lives were lost, sacrifices were made and that day will always be viewed for what it is: a crime against humanity. Obviously the families who lost loved ones at the Pentagon were struck in a very deep and personal way as was the family of the Pentagon itself.

All of us can help in our own way....

One of the most rewarding and important aspects of working on this project is receiving money to support the construction of the Pentagon Memorial that has come from the fund raising efforts of various community, church and family groups. I hope it was a day when Americans took the time to reflect on the sacrifices that so many generations have given to our nation by serving in our armed forces. For me, it was a day to think about my dad, his career in the U.S. Army, the sacrifices he made for us and his country, and the affinity that our family developed for the armed forces because of growing up in the military community. I know that is why my brother Dave, even though he was a civilian, was so fond of working in the Pentagon for the Department of the Army—he felt it was his way of serving his country. He was one of the 184 people who lost their life on September 11, 2001, at the Pentagon. I hope that everyone who reads these words will remember, in their own way, the men and women who serve our country in the armed forces and think about the sacrifices they make for all of us.

November 13, 2006

Chris Hartzler of Centex-Lee was able to provide us with some encouraging words about the progress of the Pentagon Memorial. Workers have also completed re-routing existing utility lines that were under the current “foot print” of the new park.

Remember the Goal

Whenever anyone is involved in a project of the size and scope of the Pentagon Memorial, it often becomes easy to get overwhelmed in the details of construction and fundraising or in the raw emotion associated with the tragedy of September 11th. The Pentagon Memorial Fund would like to remind all of our supporters and those involved with this project to remember what we are creating. Remember the vision of the memorial as conceived by Julie Beckman and Keith Kaseman nearly four years ago, share it with others, and continue to help us as we work to turn their vision into reality.

Odd Fellows with Uncommon Charity

On October 11th, 2006, the Independent Order of Odd Fellows presented James Laychak with a check for $14,000 in support of the Pentagon Memorial. It took nearly half a day of working with jackhammers, bobcats, and shovels to free the piece, which then began its journey through heat treatment, testing, welding, finishing, and polishing. As is expected in prototyping, each step brought with it significant opportunities for learning and improving both the production processes and ultimately the design of the Memorial Units.

July 11, 2006

Health Net Contributes $250,000 to the Pentagon Memorial Fund; Attend Memorial Groundbreaking

Health Net Federal Services helping to make the Pentagon Memorial become a reality
